2013 Feinstein Challenge Tops Goal

For the past 11 years, Catholic Charities of Broome County has participated in the nationwide Feinstein Challenge program. Through his foundation, philanthropist Alan Shawn Feinstein of Rhode Island encourages charitable food pantries throughout the U.S. to reach out to their communities for donations of food and dollars to fight hunger. Organizations that participate are eligible for cash awards from the foundation based upon the total amount of donations they generate during March and April.

This year the two-month drive resulted in total donations of $115,218, which exceeded the 2013 goal of $100,000. The 2013 total represents a 52% increase over last year and is beyond the previous yearly high total of $96,793, in 2009.

We wish to thank the people of Clear Channel Communications and 92.5 FM, especially Jim Free and Lisa Doyle, for their great work in publicizing the drive and for conducting their four-day food-raising broadcast event at the Walmart store in Johnson City. We send a special ‘thank you’ to Walmart for all their help and to all the generous donors in our community who opened their hearts and contributed food items and/or cash gifts.

The most satisfying fact of all is that the drive will allow our Emergency Food Pantries in Binghamton and Endicott to help serve the men, women and children who need food assistance.
