Director of Development & Communication

QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  1. Master’s degree preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience in communications, public relations, business administration, or related field or Bachelor’s degree with five years experience in development/public relations. Certificate in fundraising management is an asset.

Experience

  1. Three years experience in public relations or fund raising activities in a not-for-profit organization.
  2. Previous Annual Fund, special events and capital campaign and Planned Giving experience preferred.
  3. Previous experience in grant writing.

Skills

  1. Excellent interpersonal skills necessary to represent the agency and develop  professional relationships with wide range of external organizations, community leaders,  associations, and donors.
  2. Knowledge of coordinating daily department operations of a capital campaign, special events planning and management, planned gifts and deferred giving/bequests.
  3. Demonstrated ability to speak publicly and communicate clearly, both verbal and written, in a strong, organized and concise way.
  4. High level of creative problem-solving skills and independent decision-making.
  5. In-depth knowledge of public relations and development activities specific to a  not-for-profit organization, including experience with public presentations to funders  and boards.
  6. Proficiency in the use of MS Word, PowerPoint and excel required.

MAJOR FUNCTIONS

Administrative

  1. In consultation with Executive staff, develop annual statement of goals and objectives and action plans to implement short and long term plans.
  2. Develop new and unique ways to improve and implement fundraising efforts, capital campaign plans, special events and promoting media relations.
  3. Establish and coordinate long term strategic plans for solicitation of funds and resource development for the agency to maintain financial viability and good standing in the community.
  4. Prepare proposals, funding requests, assist in their presentation, monitor funding grants and/or contracts as requested or appropriate.
  5. Develop a sound communication plan around agency and development activities.
  6. Provide written and/or oral reports to the Executive Director, funding sources, Media, other community agencies, associations or any other public group as requested.
  7. Develop and implement donor cultivation and support ongoing efforts to bring in new donors and supporters and support existing and loyal donors.

Client/Program

  1. Provide day-to-day management of capital campaign and overall development operations, public relations and fund-raising activities.
  2. Participate in maintaining positive relations with various agency publics by responding to all media requests, preparing press releases as needed, and developing publicity projects to enhance visibility as necessary.
  3. Promote programs and services through effective utilization of media, ensuring community awareness of agency programs and client/community needs.
  4. Work closely with Directors and board to meet PR and development needs of the agency’s programs and the community at large.
  5. Assist in development and production of promotional materials for agency.

Catholic Charities and Community

  1. Represent the agency as assigned to various organizations, attend relevant meetings, serve on committees and participate in activities in the community as requested.                              
  2. Maintain contact and open communication with Catholic Charities staff to provide updates on projects or plans with the media as needed or able to.
  3. Perform other related duties as necessary.
