About Catholic Charities

Catholic Charities
Fighting for the homeless, organizing food drives for the hungry and providing counselors to assist those that are in need are just a few of the many ways that Catholic Charities has become a major presence in our community.

For over 65 years, Catholic Charities has developed activities and programs that respond to life’s problems, especially for the vulnerable and poor among us. Since the early seventies we have been active advocates for the homeless and hungry. Today, we fight for the dignity and well being of the many people caught in the web of poverty, disease, and powerlessness.

Catholic Charities history is rich in tradition, and has been an integral part of the Diocese of Syracuse since its beginning. From the early foresight of Msgr. Joe Toomey and the support of Bishop Foery, through the war years with Fr. John McCarthy and continued by Fr. Michael Dacey , Msgr. Robert Davern and Msgr. Ronald Bill, Catholic Charities has been a leader in providing and advocating for the poor and hurting of our community.

Our identity as a Catholic agency is important. Urged by a mandate from our Catholic Social teachings to help all people, we have brought the caring of Christ to others. We create hope by empowering our neighbors of all religious beliefs to live in dignity. Over the years we’ve served more than 90,000 individuals – from the infant whose life has just begun, to the elderly at the end of life’s journey. From immigrants and homeless children, to those in crisis or challenged by family problems – we respect life and all of its challenges and work towards a more just society for each of us.
